Born Anita Da Ponte in Smyrna (Turkey), 1895 of an Italian Father and Dutch Mother, Anita was rasied and educated in England and then Holland (latterly at the Amsterdam University). She married Gearge Rambonnet in May 1919 and in the October of the same year emigrated to the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), She undertook various official translator duties in support of her husbands colonial duties and developed a reputation for painting skilful portraits, writing short stories (in English and Dutch). An exhibition nof her work in th Hague in 1935 was very well recieved. She returned to Indonesia in 1937 and continued to paint both portraits and illustrations for books. Her family was interned by Japanese Occupation Forces and her Husband subsequently died in a camp in 1945. She returned permenatly to Amsterdam in 1948 and died in 1955.

Anita Rambonnet works have sold at Christies for between $312 and $1372 (£240 & £1057)
